Excellent job on the essays!

I didn't get pictures because I was so in the moment! You were wonderful! Getting on your Google classroom and sharing your essays. The level of discussion most of you were having about really important details whether about deep essay editing or thoughtful symbolism commentary. I couldn't have been happier! I am glad that it worked well for you too.

I did manage to get more computer time for 1st period and I am working on 2nd period. I would like essays by Friday on turnitin.com, by 11:59 p.m. If this presents a problem for you and your partner, please let me know and discuss it with me. I may give you some extra help and an extension, but do your best.

Not all partners receive the same grade if they don't work at the same level of effort. Help each other out. There will be a survey at the end.

I am hoping that with our websites we can find sponsors that will help us purchase our own Chromecart for your use. I have two sponsors already; let me know if you have ideas. My goal is to write an article/advertisement for them. That way you can practice your digital writing and interview skills and they have their name on all of our websites (150, I hope) as proud supporters. Right now, I can't check out the English Chromebooks for a month. :( I would like us to be able to work on all of our essays and our websites in class when we need to get to work. Again, you were awesome!

Our "Scarlet Ibis" Essay

Recipe for an outstanding essay:
Ingredients: Bring these to class Monday/Tuesday (If you turned in your mini-poster- I will hand it back)
1) Annotated "The Scarlet Ibis" story
2) Mini-poster of 5 symbols: picture, quote with citation, and multi-sentence commentary
3) Additional source that coordinates with the primary source (This may be an article, poem, song, interview, documentary, etc. It may be from the perspective of the bully or the bullied or someone trying to make it through with a physical/mental issue that makes it difficult to make their way in society.
Monday/Tuesday
Preheat your Chromebook: log into Google Classroom and download your report template.
Share with your partner so that you both have access to the same document.
Mix: I already typed up portions of the essay for you. All you have to do is add your ingredients and focus on thoughtfulness. Discuss with your partner the best quotes, commentary and outside sources to use.  Add your portions in the highlighted sections. There are notes to guide you. Answer any questions I wrote for you, erasing them as you go. You may remove the highlighting on the template as you work or leave it if it helps you focus, but do remove the headings and questions that were guides.
Bake: I am raising our goals and adding a bit of style to our essays, specifically --embedding our quotes.
The good news is- I already typed those up too. Check them out and change them if you need to.
Presentation: Your goal to present your essay is to make sure that MLA is correct, you added a works cited, you made sure that you edited anything I typed to fit what you typed.  Is the spelling correct?
Make sure that you run this final edit. Show it to Hill, if possible.
Serve Warm: As soon as you are done, upload to turnitin.com.
It is due Wednesday/Thursday under one of the partner's names (NOT BOTH).

Progress Reports

9/16/2016

Some of you are doing an outstanding job!!
(Some of you- need to turn in your essay!)

Unfortunately the progress report period ended the same day as the essay was due, so they were not graded yet, but current grades on Aeries, come down to the essay. There are not very many points yet, and there was only ONE essay/test. So if you didn't turn it in- it killed your points. Otherwise, most people had excellent or decent vocab/homework grades going into the essay. If you are one of the people than needs help-- come in! I will help you write and upload. Just do it. Even a failing essay will raise your grade! :)
Class Averages:
Period 1: 79.9%  # of missing essays: 5
Period 2: 74.36%   # of missing essays: 10

"The Scarlet Ibis"- Hurst

Wednesday/Thursday: Vocab. 5
Next week: Root Study guide/Vocab. Exam 1-5

Period 1- Friday-I am sorry that I missed you . Classwork: Read "The Scarlet Ibis" and annotate. Work with your team to discuss the most important symbols and ideas. Pick at least 5 favorite symbols. Make a mini-poster with pictures. Label each with a quote and commentary on what it means in the story. I will help you go further on Tuesday. If time: work on vocabulary 5 and your root list.

Period 2- Monday-
finish annotating/reading The Scarlet Ibis, write thesis statement.

Homework: Upload your essay. Find an article that reflects Hurst's message about the real life "Doodles" in our world: those who suffer because we have forgotten our brotherhood (ie: those who lose their lives to bullying, war, racism, etc.) Sadly, that shouldn't take you very long. Find anything that you feel is important to you. Annotate it and make a work cited for it.

By the end of the week, each class should:
Submit the Scarlet Ibis packet: mini-poster, annotated story, work cited, thesis, and annotated article with work cited.
