Let the Game Begin

Today we read chapter one of Orson Scott Card's, Ender's Game. After reading the first chapter, Card displays a setting in a dystopian society where an innocent six year old boy named Ender is not considered a person, but a living "experiment". The government put a monitor chip on the back of his neck in order to view everything that is going on in his life. It is clearly displayed that Ender is alienated from the other children because they envied him since he was special. Society changes Ender to act more like an adult rather then a small child he truly is.

To help us answer each question of the study guide and give proof to each of our statements provided, we must cite each answer with a quote from the book.

Vocabulary Day! :)

8/20/2015

Today we took our first vocabulary test! The goal is to learn to annotate tests and learn strategies to test better, score higher, work smarter. Even though we can (and hopefully do) work to memorize our vocabulary, we should know how a root works to be able to work with new words or words in other classes. If you did your worksheet- you should be able to do the same annotating and strategies on your test.
Classwork: Vocabulary test and addressing your "envelope" :)
Homework: Vocabulary due next week Wed/Thursday Test 1-2.

Why is reading so important? Is it just about your English class or something more? Folklore is-- the people's stories. We tell the stories of our fears, hopes, dreams and influence others every moment of the day. The most important thing is that you are an educated reader/writer so that you can make your way through the world and toward your own dreams.

Classwork
: We discussed folklore and wrote - in both MLA and business formats - about why reading is so important and what our goals are in life.

Homework
: Finish vocab, finish business letter. Extra credit: Type business letter. Due next class.

Vocabulary: Latin 1

Vocabulary should never hurt you; it should only ... :) Can you finish the sentence? Our goal is to learn vocabulary roots that will help us grow in every class. If we learn the roots- the definition is  the word. There are plenty of brain hacks to help us along the way: make a system, break it down, make it visual, repeat it often. Latin roots make it easier to learn words in every class whether they were on our vocab. sheet or not. Our four roots a week will create tons of new words when we mix and match with other roots and prefixes.
Classwork: Walk through Latin Roots 1. Look for patterns and visual clues. Understand the meaning of roots and how they work.
Homework: Finish worksheet due - Wednesday/Thursday- Test.
