  • Paragraph 2: What happens if we don't learn the lesson? Use 3 symbols from the story to show the consequences. (Sample only. Feel free to divide your 6 symbols up in another way. :)

III. Section 2: How does your story teach what we believe in? Compare to psychology, science, or religion. 2 paragraphs. Compare and contrast to article(s). Sample: 3 quotes from the story and 3 from the article- JUST like the Greek essay.

IV. Section 3: What historical or current event is your story like? 2 paragraphs. Compare and contrast to article(s). Sample: 3 quotes from the story and 3 from the article- JUST like the Greek essay.

V. Conclusion

Need examples: See previous posts. :) Remember there isn't a right or wrong. If you can come up with a good idea and prove it with evidence- you are right. Treat it as a puzzle. I just want you to show that you can try to do it without me reading it to/with you. :)

Need help? Come to tutorial and sit down with me. Bring work to show or papers to discuss. :)

Your fairytale in history or current event

What elements in your story have happened or continue to happen in real life? The third section of your paper is comparing your story to a real life person or event in the past or present. See examples below.

Snow White

How Stuff Works: Bathory
Elizabeth Bathory: "Bathory's acts have a way of engendering a hybrid of truth and legend. Perhaps the most notorious legend about Bathory is that she bathed in her victims' blood. Inevitably, this led to rumors that the countess was a vampire. This legend was first published in 1720 by a Hungarian priest who interviewed local peasants and read testimony from the trials of Bathory’s accomplices. She reportedly claimed to use blood to keep her skin young -- she wanted to remain beautiful for her husband."

Beauty and the Beast

Does the story represent prejudice to you? Or PTSD?
Who is the beauty and who is the beast? Or are we all both?

Due 12/4 & 7: Paragraphs on Symbol and Meaning. Annotated article(s) on Psychology, Religion, and Science.

Start your paragraphs- choose 3 quotes from your articles and compare to 3 quotes from your story. Discuss what historical/current events have happened like in your story. Find an article and annotate. Write your paragraphs early for extra credit.

Due next class 12/8-9: finished paragraphs on psychology/science/religion and an annotated historical article or current event.

Moral and Meaning

12/2/2015

Classwork: Period 4 and 6 read chapter 2, discussed the meaning of the characters, and worked on study guide. (Need a study guide? See button in previous post). Period 3 read pages 31-45. Work on study guide while we read. Finish if you need more time at home.

Classwork and Homework: Now it is time to apply symbolism and meaning to the fairytale. Discuss your moral with your group and what the characters and symbols in the story represent. Section 1: Write two paragraphs discussing 6 of the most important symbols and their meaning. It is easier sometimes to break them into 3 positive (good) and 3 negative (bad) symbols. What is the message or moral? What is the story about? Finish at home if not finished. Extra Credit for typing). Brainstorm what psychology, religion, science your story may be like and bring 1 or more annotated articles to support and share to the following class.

What do we believe in? What is your story teaching?

Freedom vs. Control
Good vs. Evil
Kindness vs. Cruelty

End of the Semester: Of Mice and Men and Fairytales

12/1/2015

The plan: Every day we will read another chapter from Of Mice and Men and discuss its symbolism and importance. Then students will get into groups and try to apply the same skills to deciphering a fairytale. The fairytale paper will be written as an individual, but groups will help students talk out their ideas. I will check on groups. :)
Classwork 11/30 and 12/1: We reviewed "To a Mouse" and the terms allegory and allusion. We discussed the significance of the title Of Mice and Men and Steinbeck's message. Periods 4 and 6 read Chapter 1. Period 3 read from page 13-31. Students should have finished the study guide that corresponds to our reading in class, but may finish at home if they need more time.
Homework: Read your fairytale and decide what the moral may be. Extra annotations are recommended, but not mandatory- yet. :)
Of Mice and Men Study Guide
We then took a moment to talk about Fairytales. Our Greek mythology was based on real events, our comic books were too, and now Of Mice and Men is as well. What do our fairytales mean? I am asking you to be a Grimm. Choose your fairytale from the tales provided. You are on an adventure to find the truth.
