"Everyday Use" by Alice Walker

Today the sophomores read "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker. We talked about reading and annotating, as well as, what culture means to us. These are issues we face every day that can (and do) mean life and death to us all.

Classwork: Read and annotate "Everyday Use" with the class and discuss.

Homework: Use the annotations to answer the questions on the back. Make sure that your answer contains both a cited quote and your own thoughts. Example: An important image in the story is the quilt. "I did something that I never done before: hugged Maggie to me, then dragged her on into the room, snatched the quilts out of Miss Wangero's hands and dumped them into Maggie's lap" (Walker 5). To Maggie it represents a family she knows and loves dearly. To Wangero it represents a past she is proud to have left behind. It is important to the author that ...
Question for further thought: What does culture and family mean to you?
Extra credit: Find, print and annotate an article that represents the importance of respecting race, culture or identity (your own or someone else's). Examples: racial/religious profiling or abuses, important art or examples of heritage, research an important artifact from your family.

I really liked annotating today and, it helped me answer the questions in the back so much easier.
